Minister Announces ₹100 Crore Fund For Green Hydrogen

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced a ₹100 crore call for proposals for pilot projects for developing innovative technologies for the procurement of green hydrogen for from biomass and waste materials. This is in addition to ₹100 crore that has been sanctioned for start-ups National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).
Talking about the announcement at the 3rd International Conference on Green Hydrogen, Mr Joshi said the launch of NGHM in 2023 marked a new phase of India’s clean energy revolution that positioned green hydrogen as the fuel of a new civilization and a key to long-term energy independence. He said India records the lowest green ammonia price at ₹49.75 per kg for 7.24 lakh million tonnes per annum (mpta). The minister informed that incentives for 3,000 MW per annum of domestic electrolyser manufacturing and 8.67 lakh metric tonnes per annum of green hydrogen have been awarded under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme.
The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) under the Department of Biotechnology will be implementing fund to encourage participation from industries, start-ups, and research institutions.
The Minister said the initiative would strengthen the innovation ecosystem and demonstrate new, cost-effective technologies capable of accelerating India’s hydrogen transition.
Mr. Joshi said that with global economies adopting carbon-border adjustments, green hydrogen has become an economic necessity rather than an option. India, he said, is positioning itself to lead in clean value chains by ensuring that its growth remains both competitive and climate-resilient.
