India A Rising Solar Star: SolarPower Europe

European solar sector group SolarPower Europe has in its report recognized India as a rising solar star in its report.

Global solar installations reached nearly 600 GW in year 2024 – an increase of 33% over the previous year. Of this, a report by SolarPower Europe says, solar energy accounted for nearly 81% of all new renewable energy capacity added.

The report mentions that while China’s installed solar capacity grew by 30% to 329 GW, taking its market share to 55%. But with China changing its solar market design, the report expects a dip in global market growth. The report mentions India as a rising solar star. It says that India’s solar strategy – the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) launched in 2010 – is beginning to bear fruit. After doubling its solar installations in 2024, India is now the third-largest solar market in the world.

A chapter authored by Subrahmanyam Pulipaka, Muskaan Sethi and Aaradhya Mathur of National Solar Energy Foundation of India (NSEFI) gives a holistic picture of India’s solar landscape.

The authors highlight that India breached the 100 GW installed solar capacity in February 2025, making it the fourth country to achieve this milestone. Of this, more than half has been installed in the last three years. Overall, India’s solar capacity has rose from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. This has been possible because of a cohesive policy and regulatory environment working along side a vibrant industry and streamlined implementation.

The report takes into account the uncertain political realities and says that in such an environment, ow-cost solar power could turn into the key tool to provide energy security and competitiveness to nations across the world.

The report, titled ‘Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2025-2029‘ is available on SolarPower Europe’s website.
