Covestro Launches Flame-Retardant Encapsulation Foam For EVs
High-quality polymer manufacturer Covestro has launched an advanced flame-retardant encapsulation foam for EV batteries. The polyuthrane foam, named Baysafe BEF, addresses the issue of battery safety in EVs. It is designed to minimize thermal propagation between battery cells, something has had been hindering customer trust in EVs.
The lightweight foam delivers superior flame-retardant performance by effectively inhibiting the spread of fire, significantly improving battery safety in applications ranging from EVs to portable energy storage systems.
A statement by the company said the Baysafe BEF technology will further strengthen Covestro’s position in the fast-growing energy sector as it adds to its already existing portfolio of polyurethane-based products for the sector, such as battery covers and shock-absorbing materials.
Speaking on the innovation, Akhil Singhania, Global Head of PU Specialties in Covestro’s Tailored Urethanes Business Entity, said, “This innovation represents a significant step toward enabling sustainable mobility through enhanced safety. By launching our advanced flame-retardant technology, Covestro reaffirms its commitment to innovation and strengthens our product portfolio to meet the evolving needs of the EV industry.”
