Adani Power to build a 1,000 MW solar plant in TN

Solar energyThe Adani Group is in talks with the Tamil Nadu to set a 1,000 MW solar power plant in the state. The possible location of the plant is Ramanathapuram, a backward and dry district that gets a lot of sunlight. Preliminary talks are currently on between the parties.

Tamil Nadu plans to generate 3,000 MW of its power needs through solar power by 2015, and to that extent, has agreed to purchase solar power at a higher rates, which would subsequently fall down.

An Adani Group official, while not confirming the development, praised Tamil Nadu’s solar policy and said it was something that other states should emulate.

Tamil Nadu leads all Indian states in terms of installed capacity. But a big majority of that capacity is based on wind energy technology. With ample solar power resources the state is now looking to replicate the success with wind energy in the solar power sector.

Once operational, the solar power is expected to generate over 1.6 billion kWh of electricity every year, offsetting around 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
