Govt Eases Switch To PNG Through Amendment
The government on May 25, 2026 notified an amendment to the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026 to make it easier for customers using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to piped natural gas (PNG). The amendment provides flexibility and convenience to users of LPG who want to move to PNG connections.
Under the amended provisions, LPG customers who have PNG connections as well can surrender their LPG connections within 30 days of them getting their connection.
Alternatively, they can also apply for a transfer voucher for a future LPG connection, should they later move to an area with no PNG connection. It is expected to be beneficial to people with transferable jobs, migrant households, people living as tenants, and students living as PGs.
With widespread reports of shortage of LPG cylinders across the country, the government has been promoting adoption of PNG. In an earlier notification in March, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had amended the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order, 2000, making it mandatory for customers with PNG connections to surrender their LPG connections.
