India moots sharing of gas through tri-nation pipeline

Dharmendra PradhanMinister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan mooted the idea of a tri-nation pipeline between India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. This will enable India to share Myanmar’s natural gas with its eastern neighbour.

Speaking to Bangladesh’s Financial Express newspaper, Pradhan said India is will share the gas it will get from Myanmar with Bangladesh. Currently, a pipeline to supply the gas is being built between India and Myanmar.

Speaking on the sidelines of a three-day international conference titled ‘India & the Indian Ocean: Renewing the Maritime Trade & Civilisational Linkages’ in Odisha, Pradhan told FE, “We are ready to help Bangladesh achieve energy security in the field of gas as we are doing in the case of electricity supply.”

“It is now for Bangladesh to consider our readiness in gas sharing,” he added, saying that Bangladesh’s energy adviser Toufique-e-Ilahi Chowdhury will be coming to India to discuss further energy cooperation.

The conference was organised by Delhi-based Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) and the Kolkata-based Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS).
