The research unit as India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) released a report on India’s increasing renewable energy production. Relying on data collected by Ministry of Renewable Energy, the report says that India’s renewable energy sector has seen unprecedented growth. India could set ambitious targets for 2025 on the back of the strides made in solar and wind energy installations, policy advancements, and infrastructural improvements. As on 20th Jan 2025, India’s total non-fossil fuel based energy capacity has reached 217.62 GW, the report said.

Solar energy remains the top renewable energy contributor to India’s energy needs, contributing as much as 47% of the total renewable energy generated. 2024 also saw a 53% increase in solar rooftop installations compared to the previous year. This inscrease contributed to 4.59 GW of new capacity installed. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bili Yojna helped put solar panels on 7 lakh rooftops last year. A 182% increase in the off-grid solar segment further added 1.48 GW.

In wind energy, India added 3.4 GW of new wind capacity, primarily in Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Collectively these states accounted for 98% of wind energy produced last year.

The report can be accessed on the PIB website.
