India’s Solar Capacity Crosses 150GW
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced on April 9, 2026 that India’s total installed solar capacity crossed 150GW. The landmark was reached on March 31, 2026.
In a post on the social media site X, MNRE said this milestone reflected not just scale, but the consistency and pace at which solar deployment has progressed across the country. It said that this was a significant step that reinforced India’s position in the global solar landscape and set the page for continued expansion.
“Year after year, steady capacity additions have strengthened India’s energy landscape, driven by policy focus, industry participation, and growing adoption on the ground,” the post said.
This landmark achievement comes close on the announcement by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi about India recording its highest-ever annual solar capacity addition in 2025-26, when 44.61GW were added to the grid. The recent increase in solar capacity are being led by Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. In addition to the highest-ever annual increase, the month of March saw the highest-ever solar installations, with 6.65 GW of solar installations being added, led by Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
