NDMC takes steps towards turning Delhi into a smart city

NDMCFollowing the guidelines set by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is taking steps to turn Delhi into a smart city. It recently launched a 60 kilowatt rooftop solar power plant at one of its schools in Delhi, with plans to install such plants at all its schools in the near future.

The installations were a part of its Solar Roof Top Power Project, an ambitious project that envisions harnessing solar energy across the city by installing solar panels on the roofs. The idea is that housing societies can harness solar energy to meet their needs, with the surplus getting absorbed by NDMC.

NDMC says the housing units that choose to install the solar panels will be allowed to link their units to the electricity distribution network. The electricity generated from household solar units will be purchased and adjusted in the monthly bill. Any surplus power will be transferred to NDMC’s power grids, to be used elsewhere.

To be able to generate and use solar power, the household units will be provided with net meters that calculate the amount of electricity used by the consumer, as well as the amount that is exported to the grid as surplus. These net meters, however, will come at a cost and will not be free.

NDMC will be conduct a feasibility study before it signs a household unit for this project. It will ascertain beforehand if the solar power can be linked to its grid.
The consumers will be required to sign an agreement with the council for setting up rooftop solar panels. After receiving a go-ahead in the feasibility check, the consumer can install net meters.
