MNRE Approves RE-RTD Programme For Renewable Energy Research
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on July 23, 2026 announced that it has has approved the Renewable Energy Research & Technology Development (RE-RTD) Programme (2026–31). The RE-RTD has a total outlay of ₹436.93 crore spanning from 2026 till 2031, for promoting R&D in the renewable energy sector.
Coming with a mandate to strengthen indigenous research, technology development and demonstration across renewable energy sectors, the programme will support R&D, pilot and demonstration projects, testing infrastructure, incubation centres, and collaborations among academia, research institutions, startups and industry.
It will cover key renewable energy sectors like solar, wind, energy storage, bioenergy, small hydro, geothermal and ocean energy. At the same time, it will also promote indigenous manufacturing, AI/robotics, grid integration and circular economy solutions.
The RE-RTD programme will provide 100% financial support to government institutions and non-profit research organizations, and upto 50-70% to start-ups, private industries, entrepreneurs, and manufacturing units.
As part of the programme, ₹200 crore has been earmarked for the Perovskite PV Manufacturing Pilot Line and allied projects, supporting the development of next-generation solar technologies.
The RE-RTD programme was launched and structured following expert committee recommendations and active implementations from 2012-22. The current approval is a continuation of the programme, which will run from 2026 till 2031.
